Step 1: file police report with reference number.

Step 3: apply for Emergency Certificate (EC) — 1-3 working days.

The EC allows you to fly back to India on a direct flight. Airline accepts it. Indian immigration accepts it on arrival.

Back in India: apply for new passport (fresh application, not reissue). Police report + EC are supporting documents. Tatkal: 3-5 days.

Prevention: 2 photocopies, email scan to yourself, phone photo, hotel safe. House of Visas provides embassy contact lists for every destination.
