Cover Letter for US Visa Interview: What to Say, What Not to Say
The US doesn’t require a cover letter for B1/B2 — but carrying one gives you a structured document to reference during your 2-3 minute interview.
What to include: trip purpose (specific — ‘attending my sister’s graduation at NYU on May 15’ not ‘visiting family’), duration, funding source, employment in India, return date and reason.
What NOT to say: ‘it’s my dream to visit America.’ Don’t plead. Don’t memorise scripts. Don’t volunteer information about relatives who live there unless asked.
The officer’s question is simple: will you return? Your cover letter should make the answer obvious through evidence — job, property, family, ongoing commitments.
