Visa Rejection vs Administrative Processing: What’s the Difference
Not every non-approval is a rejection. Administrative processing (AP) is different — understanding the distinction matters.
Rejection (221(g) or 214(b) for US, refusal letter for Schengen): your application was reviewed and denied. The decision is final for that application.
Administrative processing: your application needs additional review. This is NOT a rejection. Your passport may be retained. Processing can take weeks to months. Common for IT professionals, scientists, certain nationalities.
What triggers AP: security checks for certain fields (nuclear, AI, aerospace), random selection, name matches in databases.
What to do during AP: wait. Don’t contact the embassy daily. Don’t submit a new application. The original is still being processed. House of Visas tracks AP cases and advises on timelines.
